Artist Statement

Cyanotypes get their name from the signature blue hue of the developed prints. This dreamy blue photographic process is achieved by coating a receptive surface with a mixture of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide, and then exposing that surface to UV light.

These two prints were created by hand coating cyanotype chemistry onto paper, carefully positioning subject matter on the coated surfaces, exposing each to light, and then developing the prints in water to fix the images. The process requires precision yet rarely yields the same result. For me this uncertainty adds a charming amount of magic to the final image.

Carol Record is a graphic designer and photographer residing in Anniston, AL. She delights in working with her hands and experimenting with new processes.
