The Xanadu Void Collection: Patterns Inspired by ‘80s Roller Disco

For the final assignment in my Pattern Design class, we were tasked with creating a ‘culture collection’—a pattern inspired by a film, TV series, novel, album, or other cultural reference. Naturally, I chose one of my favorite films: the 1980s cult classic Xanadu as my inspiration. A dazzling fusion of roller disco, Greek mythology, and neon-soaked aesthetics, Xanadu is a visual and musical spectacle that perfectly captures the era’s bold energy. I became so immersed in the creative process that instead of designing just three patterns, I ended up developing three full collections—each drawing from different visual elements of the [...]

Daruma Doll Pattern Collection

Daruma dolls are traditional Japanese dolls that symbolize perseverance and good luck. The dolls come with blank eyes that you fill in. You draw in one eye when you make a wish or set a goal, and then fill in the other eye once that wish or goal has come true. I first encountered Daruma dolls when I visited Japan in 2015 and loved their quirky appearance so working on this project was really fun. I drew this little guy in Adobe Illustrator and created several color variations for a fun and fresh contemporary look. Pattern Design | Spring 2020 [...]

Mural Concept for Kitty Stone Elementary

Kitty Stone Elementary was looking to create a more "welcoming, inspiring, inviting, colorful and kid-friendly" atmosphere by incorporating a mural into their entry hall. Students in my pattern design class created three patterns each and were then instructed to share their patterns with classmates so students could create mural designs featuring patterns from the class. I didn't want the mural to be too overwhelming so I chose to use only a handful of patterns from the class. My design focuses on bright colors and large bold shapes to create an exciting space. My mural design was one of the designs [...]

Women’s History Month Exhibition Graphics

Design of print and digital assets for a Women’s History Month Exhibition. Client: Houston Cole Library & JSU Department of Art This was a fun project to work on because it allowed me to experiment with color in a bold way that conveyed 'women' without representing just one ethnicity.   Social Media Graphic                     Poster Design Social Media Graphic

Geometric Pattern Collection

My first pattern collection! For this project, I was directed to create a series of circle, square, and line motifs. This provided a great opportunity to experiment with mark-making. I created marks both by hand and digitally with Procreate, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Ultimately my favorite marks were the ones I created by hand using paint, charcoal, and ink. Escape from Tox City

Escape from Tox City is an interactive commentary on toxic masculinity and bullying in online gaming inspired by my experiences as a female gamer in a stereotypically male realm. The goal of this project is to raise awareness about pockets of extreme unchecked toxic masculinity that exist in online gaming communities, especially League of Legends.  League of Legends is a highly competitive multiplayer game notorious for its toxic community. Played by millions each day, the overwhelming majority of its players are young men between the ages of 16 and 30. Online gamers are largely free of the repercussions that dissuade [...]
