SPE 2017, Orlando

Society for Photographic Education Annual Conference Family Values Orlando, FL | March 9-12, 2017 This year I was the only person from JSU to attend the national conference. I was able to attend thanks to a $500 Travel Award from SPESC that helped cover my expenses. I drove down on Wednesday and stayed offsite at The Fountains. I attended some really excellent panels and met up with some friends, but this SPE conference felt off. I think the hotel location was bad -- there was nothing within walking distance, and attendance was definitely below average. Highlights Awarded a SPESC Travel [...]

We won a Gold ADDY!

Stefanie, Laura, and I won a Gold ADDY for our Hatched logo design -- part of a group project we began last semester.  I'm not sure what ADDY stands for but it's an annual American Advertising Awards event that is put on all over the country. We entered the the local Birmingham ADDYs competition. Since we won gold our entry will also compete in the regional competition in Nashville. JSU students won four of the twelve student awards given this year. Blake Dodgen won a gold addy in the campaign category. Stefanie, Laura, and I won gold for logo design; [...]

AIGA Vegas

2016 AIGA Design Conference Oct 17-19, 2016 @ The Mirage Las Vegas Las Vegas, Nevada My first AIGA conference is a wrap. It was a fun and super informative event full of interesting and inspiring content. I enjoyed hanging out with Stefanie, a fellow grad student from JSU, and the many wonderful people I met during the convention. Some great conversations were had, the speakers were fantastic, cool swag was collected, and I even won an awesome VR Headset. This was also my first visit to Vegas and it was a bit overwhelming. I enjoyed seeing the sights, but I'm [...]

Print Day with Alabama Shutterbugs

Photo Printing at Caesar's Home Studio I joined some of my fellow Alabama Shutterbugs members at the home studio of Caesar Fernandez (Wild Nature Photography) for a print day. Caesar demonstrated how to print and coat a canvas print and build a custom sized frame for it, and he generously let us do some test prints of different types of media. I printed two images, one of the Gold Pavilion on metallic paper which suited the sheen of the Pavilion itself, and an image of Utsuomiya on luster paper that I absolutely love. It's so fun to print big since it [...]

Home from Cuba!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Cuba. It was essentially a work/inspiration trip but it was also a ton of fun. I saw so many amazing things, including a ton of art, music, architecture, and natural wonders. I feel like I could work on nothing but Cuban inspired projects for the next couples of years. I'm currently doing my initial run through all my images and am working on my travel blogs for carolandkarl.com, my husband and my personal blog where we journal our travel and fandom adventures and various other things. Go give it a gander if you're [...]
