Assignment: Design a book cover for The Story of My Life by Helen Keller. Consider an aspect of her personality and/or life experiences as concept. Do not use her portrait.

These pictures aren’t really color accurate but here’s a look at the final book cover designs by my classmates and I.

Assignment
My cover design. I’m not happy with it. If I were to do this assignment over if would look nothing like this. My idea for this cover came from a visit to Helen Keller’s house in Tuscumbia where I was mesmerized by the giant oak trees on the grounds. It was the wrong thing to focus on since it’s very arbitrary and doesn’t communicate anything about her. I did enjoy the experience of working on the digital painting. Oh well.
This is probably the most striking and immediately recognizable cover. I think the way the hand is illustrated would help most people familiar with Helen Keller associate it with her. Presentation nitpick: There’s too much space between the cover pages.
This beautiful cover is my by good friend Mary Brown. Everything she does is precious and this totally captures the sort of calm mindfulness I imagine Helen Keller experienced at some points.
I think this cover is by Chris Tillman. He, AnnaMaria, and I all drove out to Helen Kellers house for research and to take photos of the grounds and home.

I have no idea what’s going on here. This is bad, very bad. The photographs aren’t very good and the photoshop work is just bad. Oh and there’s like an entire ocean between each of the cover pieces.
This one’s interesting. I like the metaphor but I especially like the typography.
I like the water concept but the font, colors, and circles give this a very Asian feel. It’s not a bad design but it’s not a good design for this book.
