Year 3, Week 5: September 17th – 23rd
My busy weekend left me feeling exhausted all week. Tuesday-Thursday were a real struggle. My back hurt all week thanks to me overexerting myself at the Photo Club photoshoot on the 15th. I was chronically tired and had trouble waking and getting going each more.
On Wednesday I suffered a really bad migraine attack. I felt it coming on before I left my house but was in such a hurry I forgot to take something for it. I was rubbing my right temple and covering my right eye for most of my video class. By the time it was over I felt like I was going to throw up. The pain was so bad I actually stepped into the ladies room to cry for a few minutes. Thankfully I had some emergency migraine medication in my locker in the grad studio and my migraine subsided after taking some pills, drinking some soda, having a bite to eat, and wearing my sunglasses for a while. If it wasn’t for the fact Seth was coming into our class to demo gear I would have just gone home sick. However, I’m glad I was able to stick it out. Why go home and suffer fruitlessy if I can quietly suffer through class and not get behind.
Monday
I spent the morning learning Sketchup. I figured out how to import files from Adobe Illustrator into Sketchup for a more efficient workflow and felt extremely proud once I succeeded. Sketchup isn’t made for drawing so being able to draw my designs in Adobe Illustrator, export as a CAD file, and then import that into Sketchup to model in 3d is a huge time saver.
I filmed a five shot sequence on how to pour a glass of wine for my video class homework. While researching the proper way to pour a glass of wine I learned a few cool tips and tricks, such as twisting the bottle ever so slightly when you finish pouring to avoid drips. I dressed up a table in the laundry room to look sort of like a dining room table for my video and waited till the morning light was good to film. It was a bit tricky trying to both film and participate in the shots. It would have been easier to be more creative with my shots if I wasn’t so dependent on the tripod. Overall the footage turned out well but the sequence itself is a bit sterile.
- Worked on my 3d modeling homework for DR 581, specifically the belt buckle design for the narrator (inspired by Galadriel from Lord of the Rings)
- Filmed my 5 Shot Sequence homework ‘How to pour a glass of wine’
- ART 690: Adv. Contemporary Media, 3-6pm
- Video project progress discussion
- We spent most of the class in the grad lab going through the photo/video gear available to grad students.
- Art Theory, 6-9pm @ Wiseguys
- Thanks to the hybrid schedule in my Video Class I was able to finally sit in on the graduate Art Theory class. The class happened to be meeting over dinner at Wiseguys pizzeria. I didn’t have time to do the readings before this class but I was familiar enough with the concepts and some of the artists to keep up with the discussion and speak up a few times. Three hours is a long time to talk art theory but it was fun and I’m looking forward to sitting in for the rest of the semester as long as I can keep up with my other coursework.
Tuesday
- ART 488: Senior Projects
- GA Day – Met with Seth to get feedback on my presentation from the previous week and to make plans for my next presentation which will basically be a comparison/contrast between Lightroom and Adobe Bridge and continue our discussion of file organization and workflow.
- DR 581: Design Technology
- Sketchup: 3d model for Lilith’s demon skull belt buckle
Wednesday
- ART 676: Video for Photographers, 12-3:30
- Reviewed 5 Shot Sequence homework and talked about different video techniques, including how to use tripods and monopods for video. Everyone in the class had really nice shots. Mine, while good, was pretty sterile in comparison. I forgot the simple task was supposed to be more narrative and ended up making mine in the style of a straight-forward tutorial video. I should have gone with one of my original ideas instead of simplifying down so much. Guess I need to reshoot.
- ART 690: Adv. Contemporary Media, *4-6
- *I felt horribly sick due to a migraine so I didn’t arrive to class until almost 4 pm.
- Seth came in and talked to us about the camera gear we have available to us, specifically the cameras, lenses, and audio equipment. He also brought in his gimble and macro lens for us to use which is super awesome and generous of him. I went ahead and borrowed most of the video gear since I doubt anyone else will have a need for it this soon. I am really looking forward to testing it all out this weekend.
I lingered at school after class talking to Chad and Stef about different projects so I didn’t get home until around 7:30 pm. Karl and I watched the first episode of the new Jack Ryan series while eating dinner. It was good but I had trouble focusing on it since I have so much work to do. Sadly I’m so tired I am really struggling to focus.
Thursday
- ART 488: Senior Projects
- Assigned gallery exhibition spaces
- Reviewed individual projects
- The show poster is nearly complete. Great job!
- DR 581: Design Technology
- Continued working in Sketchup. I helped Freddy for a while and then got some feedback from Randy on my demon skull buckle design.
I stopped by Waffle House for lunch, and to see my sister, after class. Also got a few cool shots with my new 360 camera. Ran into Jerrod Brown and enjoyed catching up. I let Stacey drive me home so she could borrow my car. I was so tired from another busy week of school that I passed out around 4:30 pm and didn’t wake up till 9 pm. Grad life is brutal.
Friday
- hung photo club fliers around campus
- attended the New York Study Trip interest meeting
- Visiting New York before I graduate from grad school has been on my wishlist for a while so I would love to go on this trip. However, I don’t need the class and can’t justify shelling out the extra go just to go as part of the group. If we can swing it I think Karl and I might try to plan a trip for the same time and coordinate our plans with the classes. -fingers crossed-
Saturday / Sunday
- Shot a video project with my sister and Karl
- Signed a contract for a booth at Kolectic Treasures
- All the homework!
- Video & Adv. Contemporary Media homework
- 3d modeling homework
- Art Theory readings
- Lightroom/Bridge presentation
