Art 625: Introduction to Design Research & Writing Methods
- Methodology Presentation
- Field trip to the Library
I gave a 10-15 minute presentation on design research methodologies along with a handout aimed at undergrad students. This was my first really tough assignment which I had to give two days early due to a planned absence. My entire weekend (Friday-Monday) was consumed with reading, taking notes, and distilling information for this project and my homework for Art 640. My poor husband had to take care of everything around the house, including all our meals, and I had to turn him down when he asked if I wanted to go see a movie because I had too much work to do. We’d both been warned by professor friends about the stress grad school can place on a marriage. It’s only my second week! lol
The most challenging aspect of this project was the sheer volume of information I needed to cover. If I were teaching an undergrad class I would either have to simplify this information further or break it up over at least 2-3 class periods. The information was interesting and I gained a pretty good understanding of the material through working on my presentation and handout.
My presentation and handout look as good as I could do with the time I had, but I’m not happy with my presentation itself. I was a bit out of it due to lack of sleep from pulling my first all-nighter. I had some tech problems connecting to the TV with AirPlay. My screen size didn’t sync well with the tv. My social media notifications kept popping up during my presentation. I felt awkward trying to pretend my classmates were undergrad students, and the sheer volume of information to be covered almost required me to read from my notes instead of talking about the material in more of a presentation fashion. Ultimately I think I covered the information well and I obviously put a lot of work into my presentation and handout so *fingers crossed* on what kind of grade I get. This project counts as a fifth of my grade for the semester.
Project Thoughts:
- I wasn’t present for my classmates presentations but I imagine the presentations were fairly redundant since we were covering the same material. Good for retention but not great for interest. Perhaps we should of split the content up into thirds for each of us to cover?
- I did not like pretending to present to an undergrad class when presenting to my classmates and professor. I would of rather of talked to them like peers and explained my reasoning for including or covering such and such for undergrad students. This is mostly a personal quirk. I am not good at pretending, it makes me very uncomfortable and therefore super awkward.
- If I had more time and freedom I would divide the content up into three assignments and include plenty of examples.

Library Field Trip
We spent about an hour touring Houston Cole Library with Carley Knight, Associate Professor Fine Arts, Language, and Communication Librarian. She showed us all the places we’d probably be most interested in and talked with us about how to find books, articles, and so on. I was already familiar with most of the art sections from my time in undergrad but was introduced to a few new areas that I will definitely enjoy. I had no idea typography was in a separate section!
Misc things mentioned:
- adbusters.org
- the Discovery Database is the best place to start
- ALLIES tab = book request from other libraries; we can submit purchase requests
Art 640: Project Brainstorming
- Learning Object Brainstorming
- Video Project Brainstorming
We spent most of the class discussing our learning object topics and discussing our objectives. The conversation went a little bit all over the place but was very helpful in generating ideas. I’m still planning to focus on learning through assessment.
We discussed video project ideas and the idea of doing a biopic. We watched one called King Soloman that will probably serve as our inspiration.
