Project Description
Adventures of the Discarded
Some believe that objects have souls or at the very least that they take on energy and have a presence of their own that can sometimes be felt. I often find myself drawn to lost and broken things and one of my favorite activities, thanks to my mother, is to browse second-hand shops to see what kind of interesting things can be found. I love taking pictures of the unintentional still lifes created by the various figures and creating narratives around them.
In October of 2022 I was in Shreveport, Louisana for an SPE conference where we were encouraged to make some work in the area for a photography competition called The Golden Lens and I decided to take my second-hand objects projects a step further by photographing some of the objects out in the world. It was the start of a new project I’m in love with. I still love my straight-up thrift store still lifes but taking the objects out into the world and layering them with handwritten text and texture allows me to create a much more expressive and poetic image. Each of these figures has a story but I’m very interested to hear how others interpret the images. If you’d like to share your interpretation please email me at carol@carolrecord.com or reach out to me on social media.
