Grad School, Week 5: Finding my Rhythm

This week flew by. I'm almost over my cold so I'm feeling a lot better but I was ready for the week to be over Tuesday evening. I think this week felt a bit long since I was on campus Saturday and Monday in addition to Tuesday and Thursday. I do finally feel like I'm finally catching up and finding my rhythm. Which is good because I signed up for four Coursera classes that all started this week. Fundamentals of Graphic Design by California Institute of the Arts Introduction to Typography by California Institute of the Arts Art & Ideas: Teaching [...]

Grad School, Week 4: Settling In

I think I now get why some of my professor friends warned me about grad school being hard on a marriage. Though Karl and I physically inhabited the same space this weekend I barely felt present. To be fair, I am feeling extra overwhelmed from being sick, and a heavy freelance load, but just the sheer volume of research and pressure to work at a higher level for grad school is more than enough to cause me to be checked out. Karl's taking it well though. He's being super supportive and is catching up on sleep. He accompanied me to the [...]

Grad School, Week 3: Documentaries & Group Projects

Art 625: Design Research Readings & Seminar Tuesday: Objectified Video Documentary Watched and took notes on a design documentary called Objectified. It was a very interesting look at what several designers consider good design. Some interesting nuggets from the video include: design as the search for form creating items that stand the test of time vs objects meant to be temporary the idea that objects become family; our relationship with objects designing things that get better with use designers as culture generators Thursday: Reading Discussion Art 640: Contemporary Media/Communication Studio Tuesday: Discussed Title IX and what to do when a [...]

Grad School, Week 2: Digging In

Methodology Presentation, the Library, and Learning Object Brainstorming Art 625: Introduction to Design Research & Writing Methods Methodology Presentation Field trip to the Library I gave a 10-15 minute presentation on design research methodologies along with a handout aimed at undergrad students. This was my first really tough assignment which I had to give two days early due to a planned absence. My entire weekend (Friday-Monday) was consumed with reading, taking notes, and distilling information for this project and my homework for Art 640. My poor husband had to take care of everything around the house, including all our meals, and I had to [...]

Grad School Ain’t No Joke

Grad School, Day 2: It's only my second day of class and I am swamped with work. I spent six hours reading and researching last night and could of easily of spent another four plus hours continuing my research in order to feel prepared. It's been over five years since I was in undergrad so I'm feeling a bit rusty. I need to find a book or video course on essential things and terminology to review before attending grad school. Design Readings & Research Seminar Discussed possible topics for our research paper I'm leaning towards doing something involving how design [...]
