Masquerade

This dreamy photogram is about to get a new home. I'm a little sad to part with it but I'm donating the original to the JSU Red Tie Dinner & Auction event to help raise scholarship funds for the JSU Art Alumni Chapter. I created this photogram in 2017. I believe it was my second time working with photograms and I immediately fell in love with the process. Photograms are a cameraless photographic process. They're made by placing objects directly on the surface of light-sensitive material, such as photographic paper, and exposing it to light. The images are then developed [...]

Laptopograms

One of the things I enjoy the most about darkroom photography is the experimentation the process seems to promote. We've made photograms, traditional negative prints with both 35mm film, and 120 mm film shot with a Holga, and we recently experimented with toning prints. Now I'm excited to be playing with a technique I discovered from Kristine Thompson while attending the Society for Photographic Education South Central conference in Waco, Texas last month. Kristine creates photograms by placing light-sensitive paper on the screen of her laptop and then developing it to reveal the image. It sounds easy but it's kind [...]

Photogram: Wrapper

I was going to wait till tonight to work in the darkroom again but decided to go work last night after getting the notice that the university would be closed today and tomorrow. I lost track of time and spent about five hours in the lab making 27 new photograms. A few were tests to see what kind of results different materials would produce. I discovered that I love the texture Vaseline adds. Baby powder, tea, and water droplets also create interesting effects. Here's one of my favorite images from tonight. It's a 5 x 8" photogram of a wrapper. The [...]

Photograms: Repetition

Photograms exploring repetition. The circles created by the elastic bands were super fun, but if you look closely you can see some of my hair which was apparently still attached. It's hard to see things like hair and small specs in the darkroom. I bought a new, untainted, bag of elastic bands so I can hopefully get a cleaner circle image. -fingers crossed-   Photograms are photographic images made without a camera by placing objects on the surface of light-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light. The result is a negative shadow [...]
